The Nanny Diaries By Emma McLaughlin

Image
WANTED: One young woman to take care of four-year-old boy. Must be cheerful, enthusiastic, and selfless--bordering on masochistic. Must relish sixteen-hour shifts with a deliberately nap-deprived preschooler. Must love geting thrown up on, literally and figuratively, by everyone in his family. Must enjoy the delicious anticipation of ridiculously erratic pay. Mostly, must love being treated like fungus found growing out of employer's Hermes bag. Those who take it personally need not apply. Who wouldn't want this job? Struggling to graduate from NYU and afford her microscopic studio apartment, Nanny takes a position caring for the only son of the wealthy X family. She rapidly learns the insane amount of juggling involved to ensure that a Park Avenue wife, who doesn't work, cook, clean, or raise her own child, has a smooth day. When the X's marriage begins to disintegrate, Nanny ends up involved way beyond the bounds of human decency or good taste. Her tenure with the X...

Hatchet Jobs: Writings on Contemporary Fiction By Dale Peck

Image
Since the initial publication of Hatchet Jobs , the groves of literary criticism have echoed with the clatter of steel on wood. From heated panels at Book Expo in Chicago to contretemps at writers’ watering holes in New York, voicesâ€"even fistsâ€"have been raised. Peck’s bracing philippic proposes that contemporary literature is at a dead end. Novelists have forfeited a wider audience, succumbing to identity politicking and self-reflexive postmodernism. In the torrent of responses to this fulguration, opinions were not so much divided as cleaved in two with, for example, Carlin Romano contending that “Peck’s judgments are worse than nastyâ€"they are hysterical” and Benjamin Schwarz retorting that “in his meticulous attention to diction, his savage wit, his exact and rollicking prose and his disdain for pseudointellectual flatulence, Dale Peck is Mencken’s heir.” Hatchet Jobs includes swinging critiques of the work of, among others, Sven Birkerts, ...

Lewis Carroll in Numberland: His Fantastical Mathematical Logical Life By nami-one-piece21.blogspot.com

Image
$16.17 shipping Lewis Carroll in Numberland: His Fantastical Mathematical Logical Life To most people, Lewis Carroll is nothing but an author of childrens' books and a photographer of ill repute. Nothing could be further from the truth. He was also Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an eminent mathematician at Oxford, with most of his work being in geometry and matrix algebra. He spent much of his time teaching undergraduates, but also children in various schools around Oxford and private pupils, and published at least as much serious work as he did fiction and nonsense. It is said that after Queen Victoria read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, she was so charmed that she demanded that she be sent a copy of his next book. And duly, she received An Elementary Treatise on Determinants, With Their Application to Simultaneous Linear Equations and Algebraic Equations and was not amused. Much of his mathematical work, being pedagogical, is now out of date and sometimes even wrong. For exam...

Audiences: A Sociological Theory of Performance and Imagination By Nick Abercrombie, Brian Longhurst

Image
Gret book with an easy intro to Rhe study if Audiences! Helped me out a lot (for UNI) thumbs up! `This book is worth reading for a number of reasons. It is the first introductory work of critical audience research that suggests how we can study the connection of media consumption in general with every day life, and it also goes beyond its competitors in showing how postmodern thinking can help us in the analysis of a whole way of life Journal of Communication Audiences are problematic and the study of audiences has represented a key site of activity in the social sciences and humanities. Offering a timely review of the past 50 years of theoretical and methodological debate Audiences argues the case for a paradigmatic shift in audience research. This shift, argue the authors, is necessitated by the emergence of the `diffused audience. Audience experience can no longer be simply classified as `simple or `mass, for in modern advanced capitalist societies, people are members of an audi...

Springfield Confidential: Jokes, Secrets, and Outright Lies from a Lifetime Writing for The Simpsons By Judd Apatow

Image
More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/ Springfield Confidential reads very much like a Simpsons version of a biography - irreverent, sarcastic, self effacing, and never taking itself too seriously. But at the same time, I actually want the serious version here - all the endless jokes and no not really after reading four paragraphs of 'truths' was frustrating. I don't read biographies for comedy nor fluff and at some point it was getting really hard to tell what was real and what was made up for comedic effect. So what was the point of this being a biography of being a part of the Simpsons cast - it should really have been an episode of the Simpsons where a comedy writer comes to visit Homer. Mike Reiss has a joke for every occasion including much of his own personal life. The endless Jewish jokes are about as interesting as endless Catholic ones and I didn't feel I got much insight into the tv show or the people running it. Every ...

Liked it. Girl Comics (Girl Comics (2010)) Not only is it awesome that these are written and illustrated by women but they also have spotlights of influential women in Marvel (past and present). I bought this for my daughter but as soon as it arrived I sat down and read it all myself, but I'm not an avid comic reader myself so I can't speak much in that regard. I think this is a great thing for girls to see that if they want to do something, even in male dominated fields, they can be successful. Plus there's plenty of good storylines to boot. I thought this was a really fun collection. It had a good mix of stories some funny, some darker. A lot of the comics made me laugh out loud. There was also some really terrific art. It was neat that they included profiles of women who were important in the earlier years of marvel. Kindle & comiXology Collects Girl Comics #1 3. The women of Marvel! The Invisible Woman, Storm, She Hulk all are powerful Marvel women that can go toe ...

A Few Good Men (Harlequin Blaze #445) (Uniformly Hot!, #1) By Tori Carrington

Image
All the ... Men were hot. I enjoyed learning about them but I wanted more. This was not meant to be more but I can't help myself in wanting more. Thanks Tori for good stories. I can't wait to read more. 0373794495 This is a collection of novellas about four marines and their return home from Iraq. Each man returns changed and more committed to making it work with their women. I enjoyed reading their stories! Romance, Mystery Thrillers I'd give this one a 3.5 Enjoyable but because of the shortened format of having 4 individual stories I didn't feel like I knew how it ended for each of the 4 men. Tori Carrington Tori Carrington writes the HOTTEST blazes ever! This is a collection of 3 short stories about men in uniform. I liked the first story the most and wished it had been longer. My review: http://bit.ly/desmGE 0373794495 Four stories pack this book, which means four sexy heroes and four women who can't help but love them. I really liked this little anthology of ...

Comprar para otros By Lissa Oliver

The Berkshire racing stable, Sainte Bastien, has been in the Marchant family for generations, a bastion of old fashioned values and integrity, but the next in line now jeopardises the family name as misfortune dogs the stable. Jockey Mark Ashton is forced into early retirement by injury and suffers a spectacular mental breakdown. Replacement, Kym Hughes, had dreamed of a top position during twenty years of mediocrity. He had the talent, but never the breaks. At 34, the break finally comes, but at Ashtons expense. Kym wonders if benefiting from a colleagues misfortune has invoked a curse, as he now suffers nothing but ill luck and Nick Marchant isnt noted for his patience. Champion trainer Nick Marchant has his own troubles. The sudden retirement of Ashton left him high and dry at the start of the Flat racing season and replacement Hughes seems to be cursed. Nick cant help but feel a little guilty at not showing Ashton the sympathy deserved, but sympathy isnt his finer trait. The early...

[Childrens Books Book] ☆ La lagartija y el sol/ The Lizard and the Sun PDF by Alma Flor Ada ✓ eBook or Kindle ePUB free

Image
To teach: Problem, action, solution Note to parents: In this folktale, lizard goes looking for the lost sun. He isn't successful on his first try. However, with the help of the emperor and the woodpecker they manage to restore the sun to the sky. A good book for talking about a problem (what the character wants and why they can't get it), actions to solve the problem (that don't always work), and the final solution. Students have fun making connections to their own tricky situations. A porquoi tale/folk tale that tells why lizards like to bask on the rocks in the sun and how the lizard rescued the sun (it also explains why opossums have no hair on their tails and why vultures have no feathers on their heads). My students and I especially liked the illustrations. La lagartija y el sol/ The Lizard and the Sun Great art, and I always love reading legends that I haven't read 2384726 times before. The English translation was a bit dry, I imagine the Spanish was much loveli...
